Mako Magic!
Hi all,

Trev, my mate Rodney Hilder and I headed off to Port Sorell with high expectations of catching a Mako shark on Saturday.

We left the boat ramp at 7 am and headed for a reef 11 kms out.

Upon arrival at our destination we soon started working on the burley trail and then it was a waiting game.

Shortly after all this, I caught an arrow squid and put him on as " live bait", within minutes the water exploded under it and the reel started screaming, I grabbed the rod, had 2 winds and he was gone.

I was very disappointed but at the same time, still felt very confident that we may yet get another chance.

It only took ten minutes and another one about estimated around 10 kilos arrived on the scene and immediately took the bait.

I picked up the rod and he was gone as well!

By now I was feeling that we had missed our chances and it was all over as the wind was now starting to get up, nevertheless, we kept “bottom bouncing” for the next hour.

Whilst the wait continued, we kept catching cod, squid, morwong and a small gummy shark.

All of a sudden, away the rod went again but this time I let him go a bit before sinking the hook in... and this time it was on.

Feeling the hook, he did a magnificent jump and somersault and it took a while after that to get it to the boat but once it was there it was excitement all round, as this was our first ever Mako.

He was probably about 50 kilos.

About 10 minutes after we got ourselves sorted out from that little episode,  a big blue shark (about 100kg) started cruising around the boat so Rodney caught him and had a bit of fun.
